Summerfield is a town in Guilford County in the North Carolina state of the United States of America. However, it is primarily regarded as a suburb of Greensboro area by the majority of the population.
As the town’s population has grown, it has gradually transformed from a rural farming community to a suburban bedroom community. In addition to a shopping center, it contains a town hall.
At the time of the 2000 census, the population was 7,018 people. The population of the town had increased to 10,232 people at the time of the 2010 census, with 2,518 households and 2,094 families living in the town.
Summerfield Elementary School is located in the town and serves as the primary educational institution for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Also in Summerfield is Summerfield Charter Academy (SCA), a charter school operated by National Heritage Academies that serves students in grades 6 through 12. This charter school educates children from kindergarten through eighth grade, though it is not as open and flexible as most charter schools are.
Summerfield Stampede refers to the group of students who attend SCA. The majority of residents of Summerfield attend Northern Guilford Middle School and Northern Guilford High School, with a small number attending Northern Elementary School. All three schools are located east of Route 150, close to Brown Summit, and have the Nighthawk as their mascot, which is a hawk.
Some residents attend Northwest Guilford Middle School, which is followed by Northwest Guilford High School, both of which are located in the nearby Greensboro suburb of North Greenville. The Viking is the mascot of the Northwest schools as well as Summerfield Elementary School.
The Summerfield School Gymnasium and Community Center is home to a gymnasium that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012 and is a National Historic Landmark. In 2005, the Summerfield Historic District was designated as a National Historic Landmark.
Former North Carolina Governor Alexander Martin had a house that he lived in the town square of Summerfield, which is not standing today. George Washington stayed in the house during the Revolutionary War. There is currently a historical home on the square known as the Martin House, but it was lived in by a son of the Governor. Currently, the Martin House is owned by the town of Summerfield.
